We all have peach fuzz, the tiny hairs that grow on our face. These can actually cause buildup, oil and grime that clogs pores, sometimes contributing to skin breakouts and also causing makeup to be less than smooth on the face. Meanwhile, dead skin and other buildup can make your skin look dull and tired, taking away the youthful glow and making you look older than you are.
Dermaplaning is a form of specialized manual exfoliation done by a trained technician, removing the peach fuzz and layer of dead skill and buildup, and leaving your skin completely renewed and revitalized.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive procedure using a sterilized medical scalpel that is especially designed to be used on your face areas. The procedure is simply but expertly done.
As a first step, your skin is fully cleansed. Next it is held taut while the scalpel is used to remove the top layer of dead skin from the face and upper neck area. The sharp edge of the dermaplaning tool is held at a forty-five-degree angle and moved along the facial areas. The fine layer of hair on the skin, or peach fuzz, is also removed during this process, leaving the skin very smooth. Dermaplaning is very similar to shaving, but produces a much different result--extremely smooth and clean, bright skin.
What are the benefits of dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning provides many benefits, which is one of the reasons it’s such a popular procedure:
- Shaves away fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), leaving the skin especially smooth
- Short, painless procedure
- No downtime
- Removes dead skin cells
- Promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells
- Smooths wrinkles and fine lines
- Provides instantly clean and bright skin
- Enhances transdermal drug delivery (drug and medicinal skin care applied through the skin)
- Rejuvenates Skin
- Allows makeup to go on more easily
- Creates cleaner, smaller pores
- Helps relieve acne scars
- Is a gentle and relaxing, completely non-invasive procedure
Who is a candidate for dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is simple and noninvasive, and safe for all skin types, colors and tones. This procedure is safe enough for pregnant or nursing women, patients with thin skin, and patients who have very sensitive skin.
Generally those with the following concerns are candidates for dermaplaning:
- Unwanted vellum hair or peach fuzz
- Deep scars, including acne scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Rough skin
Is there any recovery time needed after dermaplaning?
One perk of dermaplaning is that there is no recovery time needed. You can go back to your usual activities and routines the same day. You may experience some mild peeling, a windburn feeling or blotchiness for a few days, and your usual skin care products may tingle or slightly burn. This passes within a couple of days, and you can fully enjoy your smooth, fresh face.
